TF2 Dodgeball Terms & Tricks
Airblast (AB)
AB is one of the most common terms used by TFDB players. Formally, it is termed as compression blast. AB is a unique mouse-2 (right-click) feature for the Pyro whereby spawned projectiles are deflected by using only AB.
Juggle/Orbit
Juggle/orbit is the term give to players when they are running in a circular motion, fancily handling homing rockets. This trick is a critical asset to playing dodgeball and a must learn, failing to do so may result in leaks and the player will not go far in the game. Juggling rockets can be achieved by pressing the W, A, S, D keys repeatedly.
Hold
Holding rockets is a trick where a player keeps on juggling rockets until the target player is ready. Holding is a kind gesture and should be practiced whenever possible, but it is not against the rules to not do so. However, you are not advised to hold rockets until you feel you have sufficient experience in juggling.
Hug
Hug is the term given to a player when he or she decides to run into a rocket that is being juggled by another fellow player or vice versa, juggle rockets into players. It can disturb the gameplay so apologize if it is an accident. But if the action is persisted, that player could face voted kicks/bans from other players or banned by admins.
Leak
Leak is a term describing the leftover rockets from a player who was handling more than one rocket died, with those rockets then target to other randomly selected players who are still living in the team. Leaks can sometimes spoil gameplay for other users, it is a polite gesture to apologize to other players if you have leaked a couple of rockets, even if it did not kill them.
Intercept/steal (Inter)
Intercept is an action of airblasting rockets when the other players are either juggling, or when the rockets is approaching them. Intering is an action that we look seriously upon as "cheaping". Constantly inter/steal can lead to kicks/bans or even permanent bans.
Redirect (RDR)
Redirect is an action where players change their target player when they already have a target to aim, and is still alive. Victims of redirects have the rights to return rockets to the player that shot the rockets to the initially or to continue aiming the target they are already aiming.
Intentional redirects are looked upon as an extremely serious issue (cheaping). Player could face voted kicks/bans by others or bans by admins.
Sidestab (SS)
Sidestab, also commonly known as “ss”, is a kind of redirect where a player sending a rocket to the opponent who is vertically opposite them. Rules require players at the corners to deflect rockets to a player diagonally opposite.
Sidestab does happen as many players make mistakes while flicking rockets. Sidestab is an action that we look seriously upon as "cheaping", so do apologize If you commit any accidents of such, as failing to do so can lead to a voted kicks/bans by players or bans by admins if you continued.
Flick
Flick is a trick that commonly use by experienced players, where they curve projectiles by flciking the cursor with them.
Heaven is a kind of flick, describing rockets that are flicked up, and results in rockets going high up or even go "overhead".
Worm however is the opposite of heaven in terms of flicking, instead of up, it goes downwards. This motion produced by the rocket bouncing on the floor resembles a worm, hence the name “worm”.
Flicks can sometimes lead to sidestab or redirect if not done properly. If you do lose control of your flicks, you are advised to apologize immediately as they can be counted as "cheaping" by players and admins alike. You are also advised not to flick before you have enough experience on controlling rockets.
Cross
Crosser is the player who crosses over to the enemy side and performs grieving act such as intercept rockets in a very close range to enemy players. Crossing is seen as a very serious offense as it is very disturbing. Other players can vote for kicking/banning the crosser, or a more serious action taken by admins.
Under
This is when a player uses worm to take advantage of a certain maps (Float, Box Space, etc.). To perform undering, the map would require an open space (below platforms, breakable platforms, etc). Players will flick down rockets same as how they perform a worm shot, then those rockets will fly down into the space below.
This gives some people advantage over some other, therefore to maintain fair gameplay, undering is not allowed. Intentional undering can lead to voted kicks/bans by other players, or bans by admins.
Left-right (LR)
Left-right is a trick used by experienced players, by sending the first rocket to the left side of the opponent, with the next rocket to the right, making it harder to be deflect. It can be done with one or multiple rockets alike.
As for new players, left-right is not recommended as these attempt of flicking may be resulted as redirect. However left-right is not against the rules even there may be some players do not like it. Either way, it would be a kind gesture if you apologize after performing left-right to your enermy
Last-man
Last-man is the term referred to the last person surviving in the team. Being the last-man gives you special privileges in the match. (discussed in the rules-privileges section).
